Technical changes

1999 saw the first round of major changes to the SAFER Car. Chevrolet, Ford, and Pontiac made many changes to the Monte Carlo, Taurus, and Grand Prix, respectively. Dodge, meanwhile, made a wholesale model change, as the Avenger had underperformed both on the track and in sales. The new model was the Intrepid, which was much more aerodynamic than the Avenger.

Oldsmobile quietly pulled out of NASCAR for the last time after 1998, never to be seen again before going defunct in 2004.

Finally, Lincoln rebranded its cars from the now-discontinued Mark VIII to the familiar Continental name. The only changes to Mercury Sables were basically the same as the Taurus.
