In 1990, Western Broadcasting Company (WBC), then known as Johnson TV (JTV), saved the show Alvin and the Chipmunks, which, by then, was renamed to simply The Chipmunks, from cancellation and turning it into one of the most iconic American cartoon series. It ended in 1995, and was revived by popular demand in 2015.

In 1990, Phil Stacker, in an attempt to counter sagging ratings for JTV, picked up the series for a ninth season after its cancellation by NBC. The series saw more songs added, including original songs. Season 9 was considered by critics to be "one of the few reasons to still watch JTV".
