On December 31, 2020, it was announced on Wake Up America that Miss USA and Miss Teen USA would be split from the Miss Universe Organization into a new organization under a new alliance created by Crystle Stewart called The Pageant Alliance. The 2021 edition will mark the first year of the competition under TPA. Stewart had previously been crowned Miss USA 2008.
Selection of contestants
Despite the effects of the previous year's edition hasn't yet begun its event, delegates from 50 states and the District of Columbia are selected in state pageants which began in September 2020 and to end in July 2021 (originally expected to end in January 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resurgence of the virus in some U.S. states, but was extended to six months). Some state pageants such as North Carolina, which was postponed from November to March as a result of the pandemic. Texas was originally the first state pageant scheduled for September 6, 2020, but was first postponed to January 10, 2021, when the pandemic worsened in that state and it was postponed for the second time to May 29, 2021, becoming the final state pageant of the year. However, Idaho and Montana were actually the first two state pageants and both held on September 27, 2020 as planned. One delegate is a former Miss Teen USA state winner.
As of January 3, 2021, 3 state titleholders have been crowned.
