When the Johnson twins played Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time on December 25, 2006 on their Xbox 360, they reportedly hated the game so much that they never played it for years after finishing all three campaigns and even wrote a fifty-page review; Chloe's half of the review called it "the worst Sonic game ever made, and a really bad omen for the franchise and Sega in general. It's such a shame because we've been fans all our lives, and this is how they reward us", while Tim's half was much more critical, calling it "pestilence" and "diarrhea", and saying that "if I had the means and time, I'd go back in time and prevent the idiots at Sega who forced those poor souls to rush out this unholy abomination from ever being conceived!".

On July 31, 2019, when Johnson Industries' acquisition of Sega closed, Tim pegged a large-scale redo of the game as the first project to begin development, saying that "the fans deserve a product far better than what they got about thirteen years ago, my sister and myself included". Much of the voice cast will reprise their roles, the exceptions being Jason Griffith as Sonic, Amy Palant as Tails, Kathleen Delaney as Rouge (they had been replaced by Ryan Drummond, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and Karen Strassman, respectively), and the late Maddie Blaustein as E-123 Omega due to her 2008 death, being replaced by Vic Mignogna. Tim estimates that "only about 15-20 percent" of the original story will remain.

In addition, Princess Elise is changed into a hedgehog instead of a human, acting as a rival to Amy for Sonic's affections. She is still voiced by Lacey Chabert.
